Dickie, G. (1997). El cercle de l’art: Una teoria de l’art.
p.31

Dickie, G. (1997). The Art Circle: A Theory of Art.
p.31
Danto calls the “real theory of art”: art, says the new theory, is the creation of forms that are not imitations. Acceptance of this theory made people accept the new art. But how did real theory help (or help) iden-tify works of art? If the new theory, faced with an object-to-that is an imitation, tells one that it could be art (though not because it is an imitation), this can be helpful. Before the revolution, it must be assumed that the theory of imi-tation was of great help in identifying works of art: it explicitly discarded things that were not imitations and included those-things that were imitations. But after the revolution, the real theory of art is not really much help. All that tautological-mind tells one who faces an object is that it can be art or not. Danto, apparently, realizes that the real theo-ria is not of much help in identifying works of art, because it fully enters into an explanation of what he calls the “is” of artistic identification, which, it must be assumed, will help to decide whether an object is a work of art or not. The nature of this ‘is’ is very dark. The notion of the "is" of ar-statistic identification was subjected to very harsh criticism by William Kennick'' and, I suppose because of this criticism (and perhaps other criticism), it is no longer mentioned in Danto's next two articles. I am not going to worry about the ‘es’ of artistic identification. It may be that the “is” of artistic identification is the same as identifying artworks using an art theory. The epistemological-logical problem of distinguishing works of art from works that are not art by me-given from an artistic theory no longer appears in either of the two subsequent articles
